Initiative to enhance water circulation, restore habitats, and improve water quality in Rockport’s Little Bay

The Texas General Land Office (GLO) and the Clean Coast Texas program have approved the Restore Little Bay Initiative, a Tier 1 project aimed at improving the ecological health of Little Bay in Rockport. The bay currently suffers from poor water circulation and pollution due to stormwater runoff, pesticides, fertilizers, and wastewater discharge. The initiative’s engineering plan could reduce the bay’s water turnover time from 42 days to 19 days, improving water quality and habitat health. Planned actions include dredging key channels (Leggitt and Blevins), stabilizing bird rookeries, and building a new canal to enhance circulation. The group is also promoting public education on reducing pollutants through rainwater collection and organic lawn care. Long-term goals include replacing or upgrading the city’s wastewater treatment system with cleaner, advanced technology. The initiative is also establishing a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to help secure matching funds for grants.

The Restore Little Bay Initiative is vital for Rockport’s environmental and economic future. A cleaner, better-circulating Little Bay means healthier marine life, safer recreation, and stronger coastal resilience against pollution and storms. Improving water quality will also protect wildlife, boost tourism, and preserve Rockport’s coastal identity. Community participation—through eco-friendly habits and public support—will play a key role in ensuring the bay remains a thriving natural and recreational resource for generations to come.
